What was the most important thing that happened to me in 2024?
Realizing I had lost myself.
I’ve heard countless women—many of whom are clients—share this feeling of losing themselves. Often, it’s moms who say this to me. As someone who isn’t a mother, I used to think, That’s not something I need to worry about.
But, alas, in early November, during a moment of honest reflection, I wrote these words in my journal: I have lost myself.
Losing yourself doesn’t happen overnight. It’s not one dramatic event. It’s a series of tiny, almost imperceptible zigs and zags.
- Worrying too much about what others think.
- Letting disappointment or criticism deflate you.
- Putting your happiness in someone else’s hands (yes, moms, this includes your kids—gasp!).
- Telling yourself, “Maybe it’s too late for me,” or “I’ll do that when I’m ready” (spoiler: we’re never truly “ready” for the scary, vulnerable things).
My own zigs and zags—multiple moves, getting enmeshed in my husband’s stressful job, a new puppy, the wild ride of perimenopause (IYKYK)—led me here. Over time, I lost focus on the some of the things that matter most to me. I procrastinated, avoided, and just got by.
I’m not beating myself up over it, but I want more for myself.
Does this resonate with you?
Have you felt like you’ve lost yourself? Do you wonder where the woman with all the energy, joy, and optimism went?
If so, I don’t claim to have all the answers. But I do know this: It’s much easier to find your way back when you’re clear about your values.
And when I say values, I don’t mean the generic “God, Family, Country” kind. I’m talking about the things that genuinely light you up—the things that get you out of bed and make you feel like you’re here for a purpose.
A few years ago, I did an exercise that helped me identify my top three values. Looking back now, it’s no wonder I feel off course—these values have been missing from my life lately. These three values are as essential to me as water and air—non-negotiable and absolutely mandatory.
I’m ready to reconnect and root myself in them again.
Want to know my top three values?
